About Me

About Joanne Coyle

I write historical mysteries inspired by true events, and by those individuals forgotten or misrepresented by history. Before delving into the past, I worked as a health services researcher and completed a PhD in Medical Sociology. My research explored how people experienced illness, treatment and care, alongside the perspectives of healthcare professionals.

In tandem with my academic career, I became fascinated with near-death experiences (NDEs), independently reviewing more than 400 cases. That exploration inspired three non-fiction books examining consciousness, the afterlife and other extraordinary experiences.

History has always captivated me, particularly the untold stories of ordinary people whose lives were changed by extraordinary events. Whether researching Scotland's witch trials or unravelling the intrigue of a once-sensational eighteenth-century murder case, I am drawn to those moments where history is shaped, even as individual voices are lost.

My debut novel, The Doctor, the Witch and the Rose Stone, received international recognition, including honours from the Paris Book Festival Awards, The BookFest Awards, the Independent Author Network Book of the Year Awards and The Africa Laureate Awards.

My second novel, Echoes of Glenisla, follows in the same tradition. Inspired by one of Scotland's notorious eighteenth-century murder trials, it weaves together historical mystery, family secrets and a touch of the supernatural in a story about truth, memory, guilt, innocence and redemption. It has received a five-star rating and was a Gold Winner in the adult fiction category of the Readers’ Choice Book Awards.

Thank you for dropping in. I'm delighted to share these stories with you and I hope you enjoy discovering these previously hidden facets of history with me.
